The saying "quality over quantity" can apply to many things in life-- why would you rather settle for an abundance of things that are lack-luster when you could have one, quality, meaningful thing?
Well, the same goes for my Forza clients. Something I've always believed is that I would rather have 5, quality clients than 80 unmotivated ones. Why? Because training for me isn't about the money, it isn't about seeing each client as a dollar sign, it is about positively making a difference in a person's life-- and, at the end of the day, I would much rather make 5 differences than a pocket-full of money.
I am selective with my clients, and some say that hurts me and my "business", but I disagree. When clients sign on with me, they are not getting a run-of-the-mill workout plan, they aren't getting thrown out to sea with no life vest, they are getting a partner. When clients sign on with me, their goals become my goals, and I'll be damned if I'm not accomplishing my goals!
I give clients everything I can from my side of things in the hopes that they take it and run with it-- getting us across that finish line as a team effort. Nothing drives me more insane, though, than when they give up. NOTHING drives me more mad than me caring more about achieving their goals than the clients do. Unfortunately, despite everything we talked about and went over going into our client:trainer partnership, this can still wind up happening.
Why?? Typically because of one or both of the following words:
ded·i·ca·tion (noun)- the quality of being dedicated or committed to a task or purpose.
Key phrase: "Committed to a task or purpose"-- this is what winds up lacking. Clients start out sounding so dedicated, so committed, but slowly that fizzles away. My findings? It fizzles away when things get hard and/or uncomfortable. I actually just made a post about this on Instagram that sums up my ideas on complacency and comfort...
We know that you have to step out of your comfort zone to see change, yet people are still so unwilling to do so, then get upset when progress/change isn't happening. They claim they are 'stuck'--but in reality, you are not stuck where you are, unless you decide to be (-Dr. Wayne Dyer). In the end, they lose motivation, they lose dedication, and they are checked out while I hang out waiting to pass the baton so we can get to the finish line.
I can't have clients like that, that does not satisfy me as a trainer. I will not sit around and watch you fail because you are afraid of a little discomfort. Even if there are 10 people reaching out for training services, if they lack dedication, I don't want them. I'm not willing to take on clients that are going to leave me hanging like that. Again, quality over quantity.
trust (noun)- firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.
Key phrase: "Belief in ability of someone"-- that belief is what makes a quality client. I'm not just asking for the client to believe in me and what I'm essentially prescribing them via workouts/nutrition, I'm also asking them to believe in themselves! As mentioned in another old Instagram post, I can only take you so far...
Trust that what I am telling you to do is in your best interest (aka don't try and change things on your own-- consult me, talk to me, update me; you hired me for a reason...) and trust that you are capable of doing all of it! Without that trust, success will suffer.
If I am giving you everything I got, if I am pouring hours of my time into helping you achieve your goals, you gotta give something back to me-- you gotta give me dedication and you gotta give me trust.
That is what I look for in a quality Forza client, and that is how Forza gets you results.
